Who owns Greggs Ranch
In the early 1800s, the area now known as Greggs Ranch was part of a land grant from the Mexican government to Don Jose Maria Pico. The Rancho Santa Ana del Chino consisted of approximately 50,000 acres (200 km2) and was bounded by what are now Pomona Road on the north, Garey Avenue on the south, Reservoir Street on the east, and Euclid Avenue on the west. In 1834, Pico sold the rancho to John Rowland and William Workman for $7,000. Rowland and Workman established a successful sheep ranch on the property, which they later expanded to include cattle ranching.
In 1858, Rowland and Workman were forced to sell the rancho after being accused of aiding and abetting a rebellion against the government of California. The new owners, George and Robert Gregg, acquired the property for $10,000. The Gregg brothers continued to operate the ranch as a sheep ranch. In 1879, however, they sold the northern portion of the rancho (approximately 25,000 acres or 100 km2) to a group of investors led by James Irvine for $200,000. This sale left the Gregg brothers with only the southern portion of the rancho (approximately 25,000 acres or 100 km2).
The Gregg brothers continued to operate their ranch until 1903 when they sold it to Walter Leland Talcott for $300,000. Talcott divided the property into smaller parcels and sold them off for agricultural and residential development. In 1909, one of these parcels was purchased by Louis Schlesinger who established a dairy farm on the property. Schlesinger’s dairy farm was successful and eventually grew to encompass 1,600 acres (6.5 km2).
In 1963, Schlesinger’s son-in-law Harry Hoehn purchased the dairy farm from his father-in-law. Hoehn continued to operate the dairy farm until his death in 1992. At that time, the dairy farm consisted of approximately 2,000 cows and 500 acres (2.0 km2) of land.
In 1994, Hoehn’s widow sold the dairy farm to a group of developers led by Gary Seferian. The developers demolished the existing structures on the property and built a new residential community called Heritage Rancho Cucamonga. Heritage Rancho Cucamonga consists of 1,851 homes on 500 acres (2.0 km2) of land.
The original Greggs Ranch house still exists and is located at 9301 Hermosa Avenue in Rancho Cucamonga. The house is currently occupied by offices for the City of Rancho Cucamonga.
